Hóllbú

Home is seated on a knoll,

a knoll within a meadow,

a meadow resting between foothills,

foothills denoting mountain ranges

The meadow is clear of timber,

lest for a few table-sized stumps,

The few-acre clearing is naturally fenced,

By old-growth pine, knotted with lumps

In the wood, ferns blanket the ground,

Clover claims the gaps, pine cones littered about,

Wind-like ocean tides sweep the canopy,

Streams of sunlight breakthrough, golden beams

From the wood runs a stream,

Trickling in fuel for life,

Though it dries in summer,

It supplies the central pond three seasons ripe

Central Pond houses many creatures,

Frog, bass, and trout,

A family of wood duck,

Bob its depths, wandering about

The outer building,

A stable or barn, if you will,

Stores feed, tools, and other equipment,

It shelters animals in poor weather,

In labor, or when ill

Attached is a small coop,

For all forms of fowl,

A space for chicken, duck, and quail,

Safe from coyote and owl

Still before the house, the garden, and orchard,

Sunflowers tower and melons bloom,

Rifle and dog stand ready,

To protect from a rabbit-caused doom

Finally the modest house,

Two floors and a basement,

Worn wood floors, a fireplace,

A porch to watch the land

In the air hangs the time of day:

Coffee roast mornings,

Seasonal harvest in the afternoon,

The evening meal near sun-down

Broad window panes offer,

The land surrounding throughout the house,

Upon which the rain raps a rhythm,

As the meadow is doused

Screen doors and breached windows,

Allow the summer’s breeze,

With berries and blossoms afloat,

Wafting in a sense of calming ease

Pictures of Faith, Family, and friends,

Fill the halls with memory,

Each room with dedicated decoration,

A purpose-driven livery

A quaint kitchen culture,

Featuring a nuclear feel,

For coffee conversations,

Or a more sophisticated meal

The living room lacks technology,

Just vistas and comfortable seats,

For catching up and the exchange of ideas,

For friends and strangers to meet

The study doubles as a guest room,

The couch also a bed,

Walls lined with books,

Presumably, most having been read

The basement is a party,

Full of games, digital and not,

Musical instruments, art supplies,

Plenty of activities for any lot

The main bed and bath is upstairs,

A king bed in rustic sheets,

Deep hickory sets to match,

Welcoming the rest one seeks

Other features not yet mentioned,

Include a broad-ranging pantry,

Home to harvests and stores,

And a garage and closet upon entry
